Several SunRiders went to the big Miata gathering at Deals Gap in North Carolina, the weekend of July 31- August 2, 1998. A great time was had by all, and we will be going back next year to see all our old and new friends again.

On the way up we had a caravan of six cars. It took us almost 12
hours to get to the Tapoco Lodge from Tampa.
Here's everybody we could find who was from Florida.

This is Spider (the Wonder Car) with pilot, Kevin Morrison,
wending his way toward the lodge on highway 129.
Here's a
bunch of cars at the lodge.
And an
overhead shot from the roof...
Here we
are at the Look Rock picnic area on the Foothills Parkway. This
is on the Tennessee side of the Gap.
Another shot of the line-up at Look
Rock.
We sat down for a sack lunch here.

This was on highway 129 on the way to Look Rock, after the end of
the Gap. It's nearly impossible to take pictures while you're
driving in the Gap. You'd probably run off the road.

This is on the Foothills parkway, near Look Rock. The mist just
above the road is what earns the Smoky Mountains their name.
After the
picnic, a few of us were led on a long drive through the
countryside. Here we are at a scenic overlook on the Foothills
Parkway.

Here we are on Parsons Branch Road, a one-way, one lane, unpaved
road through the forest. Small streams cross the road in several
places, and we had fun splashing down as we drove through. Our
cars got filthy! If you've never been off-roadin' in a Miata, you
don't know what you're missing!
This is
near Cade's Cove, an 18th century settlement within the Great
Smoky Mountains National Park. Even though there were too many
tourists, it was a glimpse of the past.
